Banshay (Arts of the Sword, Staff and Spear)

Shan’s dha Banshay is a weapon-based martial art of Myanmar. Both Indian and Chinese sources influenced the development of weapons systems. The sword, staff and spear are the major weapons. With the sword, the goal is to disarm the opponent. Sword fights are even conducted with the sword still sheathed, since only under extreme conditions will a Burmese swordsman unsheathe his or her sword.

Banshay, Burmese term to describe weapons training and defense methods, a part of the Thaing martial arts system. Traditional Burmese weaponry includes the use of variety of wooden or stick armaments, ranging from a small sized pocket or fist stick (similar to the Japanese yawara and kubaton), to short and mid-sized batons, walking staffs, clubs and spears. 

Also utilized are hosts of edged weapons; including a variety of knives, machetes, swords (called dah) and fighting spears. Ropes and chains, as well as other non-conventional items such as belts, whips, shoes, clothes and any imaginable tool available for defense, are parts of the Banshay practitioner’s repertoire. There is a national Thaing organization in Myanmar, which includes the teaching of Banshay.
