Short-range weaponry is a
very important aspect of self-preservation,
is easily obtainable and usually close at
hand. It could be a knife, stick, farming or
fishing tool, which come in many shapes and
sizes for both work and protection.

Knife
We all use a knife every day. Whether
preparing a meal or on the job, most of us
can manipulate a knife quite well. Many have
a knife for safety or protection without any
defensive training or education in its
usage. Defending yourself against a
combative act without sustaining personal
injury can be quite difficult if you
haven’t been correctly trained.
The combative knife used in
chanbara is called a tanto. This
breakthrough knife allows the combatant to
understand and simulate the dynamics of
close-combat fighting without the dangers
associated with actual blades and knives.

Tanto
The tanto is an extremely versatile weapon
of protection. The tanto was long enough to
feign off attacks and short enough to
expertly maneuver and manipulate any
fighting situation. There are many ways to
hold, handle and fight with the tanto. This
short-range sparring and training knife has
12 inches of striking area and six inches of
handle.
Scoring Points
The head, chest and stomach are the
three general target areas. For a point to
be scored, the combatant has to attack
within these three areas. The strike must be
a stab, thrust or deep cut. Slashing is
considered weak. A strike to arms, legs and
other lesser parts of the body will not
receive a point.
NOTE: The short-range
weaponry divisions are the only divisions
where the combatant can use the weapon as
well as kicks, hand technique and takedowns
to score points. This division has the most
body contact and elevates the chances for a
swift strike to a vulnerable area.

Nunchaku
This traditional Okinawan farming tool ended
up in the dojo as one of the martial
artist's most-used weapons.
After watching old kung fu
movies, many of us have picked up a pair and
experimented. With practice, one could look
like an expert in a fairly short time.
Sparring with this weapon is very dangerous
and outlawed in many states.
Practice and discover the
speed of the nunchaku without giving
yourself a concussion or broken teeth.
ActionFlex nunchaku allow you to give it all
you got while discovering a whole new world
of fighting strategy and technique. The
nunchaku has 13 inches of striking area.
Scoring Points
The target areas of the body are head,
torso, legs and arms. Striking and thrusting
techniques receive points. All completed
mein, kote, do, ashi and tsuki strikes are
legal. The strike must be clean and swift,
not allowing the opponent to make a
counterattack.

Baton
With the traditional and combative martial
artist in mind, batons offer a safe
alternative to practicing with rigid
weapons. These batons enable all martial
styles and stylists to go in for technique,
without having to stop just short of the
target or pain threshold.
From law enforcement
agencies to martial art practitioners, these
padded batons give the student and the
instructor the ability to practice basic to
highly advanced strikes, takedowns, joint
and body control, pressure points and focus
techniques. Batons have between 14-25 inches
of striking area with 6 inches of handle.
Scoring Points
The target areas of the body are head,
torso, legs and arms. Striking, and
thrusting techniques receive points. All
completed mein, kote, do, ashi and tsuki
strikes are legal. The strike must be clean
and swift, not allowing the opponent to make
a counterattack.

Escrima,
Arnis and Kali Sticks
Hard-hitting
The Escrima, Arnis and kali sticks have
full-technique capabilities. They are
designed for the practitioner who wants the
best of both worlds.
You can now spar and fight
at full speed without the pain, suffering
and dangers associated with regular sticks.
These sticks have between 18-25 inches of
striking area with 6 inches of handle.
Soft-hitting
With the younger or softer-hitting martial
artist in mind, this full contact 24-inch
stick provides a safe alternative to a rigid
(or Pro-series) stick.
This Soft Series stick
offers all martial artists the opportunity
to safely practice technique in a softer
manner. The soft-stick has 18 inches of
striking area and 6 inches of handle.
Scoring Points

torso, legs and arms. Striking and thrusting
